Conservative Media Attack Native American Blessing At AZ Memorial Service
January 13, 2011 12:38 pm ET

Following the memorial service for the victims of the tragic shooting in Tucson, several in the right-wing media attacked and mocked the inclusion of a Native American blessing as part of the invocation.

On a January 12 blog post covering the rally, Michelle Malkin wrote:

"Native American gives rambling speech while holding a feather. His remarks are frequently interrupted by whoops and cheers. He gives a shout-out to his son serving in Afghanistan. Brags about his ethnic Mexican background. Babbles about two-legged and four-legged creatures and the feminine energy that comes from Mother Earth."

In a January 12 post after the service, the conservative blog Power Line said:

"As for the "ugly," I'm afraid I must cite the opening "prayer" by Native American Carlos Gonzales. It was apparently was some sort of Yaqui Indian tribal thing, with lots of references to "the creator" but no mention of God. Several of the victims were, as I understand it, quite religious in that quaint Christian kind of way (none, to my knowledge, was a Yaqui). They (and their families) likely would have appreciated a prayer more closely aligned with their religious beliefs."

Wow. Criticize a freakin prayer and show your ignorance at the same time. Last time I checked at least two of the victims were Jewish (not quainty Christian, asshole), and creator is a pretty inclusive term. What a bunch of jerkwads.

I say, "GO BACK TO EUROPE" if you don't want to 'deal with' 'phoney Indian fantasy stuff'.

What is OUR country coming to? D:

Somebody needs to remind Michele Malkin she's still brown.

I liked the post on NPR by a Latina journalist in Tucson. She said that if the shooter were Hispanic this would be about immigration and deporting as many brown people as possible. Since the shooter was white it became about politics. She also gave a shout-out to Daniel Hernandez, Rep. Giffords's openly gay Hispanic aide who helped save her freakin' life. Funny that none of these Republicans seem to recall this.

THIS. If the shooter was a POC, they'd have no problem demonizing him and his entire race, howling about terrorism and threats to 'Merica. Since it's a white boy, it suddenly becomes a 'confused and mentally ill young man'. Crazy white people get a pass in this society, they're victims, regardless of the fucked up shit they do to other innocent people. And the way all these asshole 'pundits' are politicizing the whole thing is the pinnacle of disgustingly bad taste.

O.... Kay... Apparently "God" and "The creator" are different entities, now? :P

Ha, that ignorant douche bag's firm came down on him for that shit. He had to retract his statement and issue an apology. His law firm also issued a disclaimer stating that his opinions don't represent the firm, and decrying his comments as insensitive.

Funny. "Douchebag" is the same term that came to my mind.
